Japan's breaststroke swim king Kosuke Kitajima (北島康介) has defused a potential diplomatic row by praising the Chinese food at the Beijing Olympic athletes' village. Fears voiced by the Japan Olympic Committee (JOC) over the quality of the food available to the athletes in Beijing appeared unfounded as Japan's swimmers gave the Olympic menu a thumbs-up.

Kosuke Kitajima won the breaststroke at the Japan's swimming Olympic trial in June 8, 2008.
